YouTube Thumbnail Downloader
Grab the thumbnail from any YouTube video in every size it actually exists in. Works with Shorts, youtu.be links and bare video IDs.
Each size is checked against YouTube before it is listed, so you never get a broken image or a grey placeholder.
FAQs
How do I download a YouTube thumbnail?
Paste the video link into the box above and press Get thumbnails. Every size that actually exists for that video appears with a preview, and you download whichever one you need. Watch links, youtu.be short links, Shorts links and the bare 11-character video ID all work.
Why is the max resolution version missing on some videos?
Because it genuinely does not exist. YouTube only generates the 1280x720 thumbnail when the uploader supplied a source large enough, which rules out most older videos and anything uploaded in low resolution. Rather than showing you a broken image, this tool checks each size on YouTube's servers first and lists only the ones that are really there.
What is the highest resolution a YouTube thumbnail can be?
1280x720, served as maxresdefault. That is the ceiling regardless of what the uploader provided, so no tool anywhere can give you a larger original. Anything advertising 4K thumbnails is upscaling the same 1280x720 file and inventing the extra pixels.
Why do some sizes have black bars?
The 640x480, 480x360 and 120x90 versions are 4:3 boxes left over from when YouTube itself was 4:3. A widescreen thumbnail gets padded into that shape with black bars above and below. The 1280x720 and 320x180 versions are true 16:9 with no padding, so pick one of those if the bars matter to you. Each size is labelled above.
Can I download the thumbnail from a YouTube Short?
Yes. Shorts links work exactly like normal video links here. Bear in mind that Shorts are shot vertically while the stored thumbnail is still a horizontal frame, so what you get is the 16:9 cover rather than the full vertical frame.
Is it legal to use someone else's thumbnail?
The thumbnail is part of that creator's copyrighted work, so downloading one does not give you the right to republish it as your own. Commentary, reaction videos, reviews, research and news reporting generally sit under fair use in the US and fair dealing elsewhere, but the rules are narrower than people assume. If you are using it commercially, ask the creator.
Do I need to sign in or install anything?
No. There is no account, no extension and no software. Paste a link and download.
Does this work for private or deleted videos?
No. YouTube stops serving thumbnails for videos that are private, unlisted to you, or removed, and the tool will tell you nothing came back rather than showing a grey placeholder. If you get that message, check the link opens in a normal browser tab first.
What format are the downloads in?
JPG, because that is what YouTube stores. If you need a PNG or WEBP version, run the downloaded file through our image converter, and use the image compressor if you need it smaller for a page.
