What is glitch text?
Glitch text, also known as Zalgo or cursed text, looks corrupted, as if the letters are melting or crawling off the screen. It is popular for horror posts, spooky usernames, memes, gaming names and anything that should feel unsettling.
This generator lets you control the effect instead of settling for one random look. Use the sliders to set how many marks stack above each letter, strike through the middle and hang below it. Hit Reshuffle for a new random arrangement, and pick from ready-made variations like Rising, Sinking and Cursed.
It runs in your browser with nothing to install and no sign-up. The glitch on earlier letters stays put as you keep typing, so the text does not jump around while you write.
How to make glitch text
- Type your text: Enter the words you want to glitch. Short words and names give the cleanest results.
- Adjust the strength: Move the Above, Through and Below sliders to control how far the glitch spreads in each direction.
- Reshuffle until it looks right: Click Reshuffle to randomize the marks again while keeping the same strength.
- Copy your favorite: Click any glitch style to copy it. The preview shows how it looks as a Discord display name.
- Paste it anywhere: Paste the glitch text into a post, comment, message, bio or name field.
How glitch text works
Unicode has a group of characters called combining marks, such as accents, dots and tildes, that attach to the letter before them. They exist so that languages can write letters like é or ñ.
Unicode does not limit how many marks can attach to one letter. Glitch text takes advantage of that by stacking dozens of random marks onto every character. Your device draws them all on top of each other, and they spill above and below the line, which creates the corrupted look.
Where glitch text works best
- Discord, X and comments: short glitchy words or names get attention in fast-moving feeds.
- Horror and Halloween posts: a single cursed line sets the mood.
- Gaming names: a light glitch keeps the name readable while still looking eerie.
Use it with care
Heavy glitch text can overlap the lines above and below it, and some apps trim it or limit how many marks they show. Some communities and servers ask members not to use it because it makes chats hard to read. Screen readers also struggle with it. Keep the strength low for names and anything people need to read, and save the heavy versions for short, dramatic moments.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is Zalgo text?
Zalgo is another name for glitch text. It comes from an internet horror meme and refers to text covered in stacked accent marks that make it look corrupted.
Why does the glitch look different every time I reshuffle?
The marks are chosen at random. Reshuffle picks a new random set with the same strength settings. While you type, the glitch on letters you have already typed stays the same.
Why is my glitch text cut off in some apps?
Some apps clip text to its line height or limit how many combining marks they draw. Lower the Above and Below sliders so the effect stays closer to the letters.
Can I use glitch text in my username?
Most platforms only allow plain letters and numbers in usernames. Glitch text usually works in display names, nicknames, bios, posts and messages.
Is this glitch text generator free?
Yes. It is free with no sign-up and runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you type is stored.
